Presiding Bishop Brings Hope and Encouragement to Jamaica

The Presiding Bishop of the Church of God of Prophecy, Tim Coalter, recently concluded a pastoral visit to Jamaica aimed at strengthening and encouraging ministers serving in areas severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Accompanying him were, Executive Director of Finance and Administration Daniel Felipe; General Presbyter for the Caribbean and the Ocean Islands Bishop Dr. Clayton Martin and his wife, Minister Sonia Martin; National Bishop for Jamaica Bishop Dr. Winston Leith and National Administrative Assistant, Bishop Vincent Harvey.

The team undertook a two-day visit from February 10-11, 2026, traveling across sections of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, St. James and Trelawny.  During this time, they met with parish administrative assistants and local church pastors who were directly impacted by the devastating storm.

A Ministry of Presence and Care

Marked by heartfelt fellowship, prayer, and pastoral encouragement, the visit provided an opportunity for leaders to hear first-hand testimonies from pastors who faced tremendous challenges as the hurricane damaged church buildings, homes, and essential infrastructure. Gifts of appreciation from the International Office were also presented as tangible expressions of the global church’s support.

Encouragement Amid Recovery

In addressing the pastors, Bishop Coalter commended their resilience, courage, and unwavering faithfulness in ministry despite adversity. He emphasized the importance of unity within the body of Christ and reaffirmed the continued commitment of the International Office and the global church community to assist in both spiritual and material rebuilding efforts.

Bishop Felipe echoed these sentiments, reminding pastors of God’s sustaining grace even in seasons of loss. He reported that international donations and commitments totaling approximately 15 million Jamaican dollars had been received, with a portion already disbursed to the national treasury to support recovery initiatives. He also announced the distribution of a special monetary gift of appreciation prepared for all pastors in attendance.

National and Regional Support Initiatives

Regional and national leaders provided updates on ongoing rebuilding plans, particularly for congregations experiencing severe damage. Bishop Harvey highlighted the implementation of the Church Assistance Programme (CAP), an initiative of the COGOP Jamaica’s National Office through which stronger congregations “adopt” churches significantly impacted by the hurricane, offering financial, structural, and spiritual support throughout the restoration process.

Gratitude and Renewed Hope

The pastors expressed deep gratitude and great joy in thanking the international leaders for their visit and generous gifts. They enthusiastically conveyed their appreciation for the swift response of national leadership during and after the disaster. Every effort – from the distribution of care packages to visits by national workers and the continued pastoral visits – was deeply valued and warmly received.

The presence of international leadership served as a visible reminder that the global church stands united in times of crisis—offering not only immediate relief but sustained partnership and care. The Presiding Bishop’s visit has renewed hope among leaders and members alike, inspiring continued faith and perseverance as churches and communities rebuild for the future.
