“And He Himself gave some to be pastors . . .” (Ephesians 4:11 NKJV).
There are few callings more sacred—or more demanding—than that of a pastor. Each week, thousands of pastors across the Church of God of Prophecy faithfully open God’s Word, lead worship, pray with the broken, comfort grieving families, dedicate babies, officiate weddings, visit hospitals, counsel marriages, disciple believers, and reconcile the world to Christ. Much of what they do is never seen by the congregation, yet heaven records every act of faithful service.
The Apostle Paul instructed the church to “respect those who labor among you . . . and esteem them very highly in love because of their work” (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13 ESV). Pastor appreciation is more than an annual observance—it is a biblical opportunity to honor those who faithfully shepherd God’s people.
October has been designated as Pastor Appreciation Month. I want to encourage every local church to make this more than a date on the calendar. Let it become an opportunity for extravagant appreciation—expressed through extravagant gratitude, extravagant encouragement, generous giving, and intentional prayer. Honor should never be reserved only for retirement or a memorial service. Faithfulness deserves encouragement while it is still being lived.
As you honor your pastor, remember the family who serves alongside them. Spouses and children often share in the sacrifices of ministry while quietly supporting the work to which God has called them. They, too, deserve our extravagant love, encouragement, and appreciation.
Recently I came across the following Facebook post (author unknown). I paused when I read it. Although written with the small-church pastor in mind, I believe it speaks to the heart of every faithful shepherd, regardless of the size of the congregation. It reminded me that while the world often celebrates prominence, God honors faithfulness.
Pastor, know that your labor is not in vain. The lives you touch, the prayers you pray, the tears you shed, and the seeds you sow are making an eternal difference. Your influence extends far beyond what you can presently see.
To every pastor and pastoral family across our global fellowship, thank you for serving so faithfully. We honor you, we appreciate you, and we are praying for you. Thank you for answering God’s call and for serving His Church with such faithfulness.
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” —Galatians 6:9 (NKJV).
