One Child Fund: Update on Haiti Orphanage

We continue to receive challenging reports from our Haiti ministries. Sadly, the nation continues to be gripped by chaos and gang violence that has spread far beyond the capital. Despite attempts to restore peace, armed groups remain in control, with nearly 90 percent of Port-au-Prince under their influence. The instability has forced thousands from their homes, leaving families searching for safety and stability.

Just about an hour from the capital city, in the coastal town of Léogâne, is the site of our oldest children’s home. This home is currently operating and cares for approximately 50 children, providing them with food, shelter, education, and spiritual guidance. A beautiful testimony of God’s faithfulness is seen in the fact that several former children who were raised in this home now serve on the leadership team, giving back to the very place that once cared for them. The home itself has dormitories, bathrooms, classrooms, and a kitchen, and in more peaceful times, they were able to rent out a guesthouse on the property as an extra source of income.

Last year, however, the violence spread outside of Port-au-Prince and reached into their community. It was a fearful and uncertain time, yet God’s protection was evident. In November, the leadership team prayerfully decided to act with wisdom and move the children each evening to a more secure location. Night after night, God went before them, keeping them safe through a very dangerous season. By December, when the tension had diminished considerably, the children were able to fully return to their home in Léogâne. Looking back, the staff and children testify to God’s hand of provision and protection. He is truly faithful!

Even amid these challenges, the children’s home remains a place of joy, learning, and growth. The start of the school year, originally scheduled for the first week of September, was postponed until the first week of October. In the meantime, the staff continued the summer program with classes to help the children smoothly transition and quickly adapt to their new classrooms. As part of the summer program, the staff organized on-site summer activities to keep the children engaged and to continue teaching them valuable skills. The children participated in a soccer tournament, enjoyed some painting and sewing courses, and even helped with small upkeeping projects around the grounds. The children also received training in table manners, learning that even something as simple as how we sit at the table can be a reflection of honor and gratitude. And, of course, they made plenty of time to celebrate and enjoy being together. These kids truly know how to have a party!

The Haiti children’s home is a living testimony to the words of Colossians 3:16-17:

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. (NLT)

While purchasing and supplying every needful item remains difficult during this challenging time, the leadership team has been able to obtain most of the essentials for their daily needs. We know that God will faithfully supply for all our needs. Please continue to pray for the incredible ministry provided at the children’s home and for the nation of Haiti.
