Egg Object Lesson

Bible Point:  Only Jesus can remove the sin that separates me from God.

Bible Verse: Isaiah 59:2
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so he will not hear.

Materials
egg
cardboard cylinder (toilet paper tube works well)
plastic tray or aluminum pie pan
glass or jar

Preparation
Fill the glass half full with water. Place the tray on top of the glass. (You can use up to five glasses and five eggs if you are feeling brave!) Stand the cardboard cylinder on the tray. It is very important that the cylinder be directly over the glass. Balance the egg on top of the cylinder.

Presentation
Explain to the children that sin separates us from God. (Isaiah 59:2) Jesus died to take way our sins so that we would no longer be separated from God. Show the children the egg set-up. The egg represents people. The tray and cardboard tube represent our sin. The glass filled with water represents God. There is no way for us (egg) to reach God (glass) when there is sin (tray and cardboard tube) in our lives. The sin (tray) must be removed in order for us to reach God.

At this point, you should use your hand to give the tray a firm hit. Do not do this timidly, or it will not work. As the tray moves away, the egg should fall into the glass.

If it works, you explain that just like you had to use your hand to move the tray, the only way for sin to be removed was for Jesus to die on the cross.

If something goes wrong and the egg cracks, you talk about the different ways that people try to get rid of their sin (doing good deeds, going to church, etc.). Those things don’t take away our sins. They just cause a big mess like the broken egg.
