First-Ever Institute of Children’s Ministry Conducted in Colombia

On October 27 and 28, 2018, International Children’s Ministries conducted training in collaboration with the national office of Colombia. Forty-five participants came from 15 churches and one mission for the intense series of workshops that presented instruction on the biblical foundations of children’s ministry, leading children to Christ, constructing a Bible lesson, and developing a discipleship plan.

The teaching team included International Director of Children’s Ministries Shaun McKinley, Heartland Regional Director of Children’s Ministries Jacqueline Chavez, and Colombia National Director of Children’s Ministries Gina Duque. National Overseer David Ceballos attended the entire event and spoke frequently, challenging those in attendance to press toward more excellent ministries that include children in all aspects of the life of their churches.

Training consisted of the basic foundations of children ministry, as well as the more advanced courses “Building a Bible Lesson” and “Developing a Discipleship Plan.” Participants felt a great sense of accomplishment after completing activities where they produced their own unique plans that included Bible truths, Bible stories, and Bible verses to present to their children.

The participants shared their most significant challenges as being the lack of affirmation by church leaders, as well as the lack of value of children to God’s kingdom and life of the local church. Some mentioned needing to grow in their relational skills with children, while others expressed feelings of inadequacy in helping children struggling with emotional and physical needs.
