Scholarships Surpass $1m

Scholarships Surpass $1m

The Church of God of Prophecy International Offices is marking a significant milestone in its support of ministers and leaders pursuing higher education.

In a meeting with the regional and state overseers of North America last week, Shaun McKinley, director of Accredited Ministry Development, announced that scholarships and grants provided by the offices to students enrolled in partnering programs has recently surpassed one million dollars.

“We are thankful for the faithfulness and generosity of our donors and tithing local churches,” said McKinley. “Because of their contributions, over the past decade we have been able to invest in our current and future leaders as they participate in our educational initiatives.”

The scholarships and grants awarded from Accredited Ministry Development’s annual budget are only one part of the picture. When adding scholarships from national/regional/state offices, as well as grants provided to underwrite courses, over $2.7 million has been contributed to students and schools.

“We continue to be inspired by the efforts of our students,” continued McKinley. “In addition to pursuing their studies, many are bivocational pastors, balancing school, work, and family responsibilities. Without these scholarships and the variable tuitions that we negotiate with our partners, it would be impossible for many to continue their education and grow in their ministry skill.”

Scholarships are awarded throughout the year with a number of additional scholarship funds being added within the past year. Current scholarships include:

  • Adrian L. Varlack All Nations Scholarship
  • Billy D. Murray Harvest Scholarship
  • Church Matching Scholarship
  • Cross Cultural Ministry Scholarship
  • Doctor of Ministry Scholarship
  • Ministry Honors Scholarship (formerly Leader of Leaders)
  • PTS Certificate Course Scholarship
  • Women in Ministry Scholarship

Scholarship applications may be completed online at www.cogopamd.org. Individuals or churches may also contribute to any of the above scholarship funds at the website.

News from Ethiopia

News from Ethiopia

The last several months we have suffered many problems with social unrest and political upheaval. We were unable to gather our leaders in April for training due to many travel restrictions, road blocks, and a government order for no public gatherings. In spite of this, our districts held their own gatherings and God tremendously blessed, as we will share below. As an update, we believe we have experienced an answer to our many prayers. In recent weeks, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has resigned and the government has installed a new Prime Minister who is a Pentecostal believer! He is also from the Oromo tribe, the tribe who has suffered most of the oppression in recent years. We are so thankful that these changes are taking place with very little force.

Statement by the General Overseer

Statement by the General Overseer

From the Office of the General Overseer

The Church of God of Prophecy is a global family ministering in villages, towns, and communities in 135 nations of the world. This international ministry has, from its early days, held to the ideal that God’s church would be composed of every “kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” (Revelation 5:9). We have, to the best of our ability, fashioned this Church along those lines, even when multiculturalism was unaccepted and illegal in some countries.

Today, as we face actions and words that seek to divide us, the Church of God of Prophecy remains committed to the biblical affirmation that every man and woman is made in the image of God.

As an all-nations church, especially during this season of seeking, let us choose to remain faithful in praying for our leaders and be united in purpose to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

21 Days of Prayer & Fasting

21 Days of Prayer & Fasting

Bishop Sam N. Clements, General Overseer

For twenty-one days, beginning January seventh, we will unite around specific daily prayer directives. These prayer guides are available on this page and on our social media to help insure our prayers are touching the most current needs.

I am also inviting you to join us January seventh, on the first evening of our season of seeking, for our global Night of Prayer live via simulcast. During this time, you will be able to submit requests that will be prayed for by our staff and ministry leaders, as well as those watching online.

Thank you for making plans and efforts to join me in prayer. I believe even greater things are ahead for the Church of God of Prophecy, but they will only be obtained through prayer and fasting.

FASTING RESOURCES

Fasting is the most powerful spiritual discipline of all the Christian disciplines. Through fasting and prayer, the Holy Spirit can transform your life. Fasting and prayer can also work on a much grander scale. According to Scripture, personal experience and observation, I am convinced that when God’s people fast with a proper Biblical motive-seeking God’s face not His hand-with a broken, repentant, and contrite spirit, God will hear from heaven and heal our lives, our churches, our communities, our nation and world. Fasting and prayer can bring about revival – a change in the direction of our nation, the nations of earth and the fulfillment of the Great Commission.

SIMULCAST

During this annual Night of Prayer at the Church of God of Prophecy International Offices, everyone can join in the prayer movement online as we pray together. Viewers can submit prayer requests through social media, email to prayer@cogop.org, and by telephone. We will pray for those requests during the event. Last year, more than a thousand people joined together from areas all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, Mexico, South Africa, Dominican Republic, Germany, El Salvador, and India. Simulcast LIVE in English, Spanish, and French.

Early Messengers Archived Digitally

Early Messengers Archived Digitally

The early history of the Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) is now easier to access than ever! The Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center recently completed digitization of the COGOP’s flagship periodical, the White Wing Messenger, from 1923 to 1954. These years (consisting of 765 issues) are now accessible on the Consortium of Pentecostal Archives website.

The COGOP is a significant classical Pentecostal denomination with over one million members in over 130 countries worldwide. Established in 1903 and with headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee, the COGOP shares a common history with another classical Pentecostal denomination, the Church of God (Cleveland, TN). In recent years, the COGOP has been forging closer relationships with its sister Pentecostal fellowships.

The digitization of the White Wing Messenger was itself a cooperative effort across the denominational divides. The Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center (the archives of the Assemblies of God) completed the digitization of the project. The idea for the project originated with Tim Carter, Director of the Arise Shine Pentecostal Historical Center. Carter suggested to Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center Director Darrin Rodgers that the White Wing Messenger needed to be digitized. The Arise Shine Pentecostal Historical Center is the archives of the [Ephesus] Church of God, a small denomination which has its roots in the COGOP. Rodgers approached Dr. David Roebuck, Director of the Dixon Pentecostal Research Center (the archives of the Church of God [Cleveland, TN]), and asked him if he could make contact with the appropriate person within the COGOP to secure permission. Roebuck contacted Paul Holt, who serves as Executive Director of Finance and Administration for the COGOP, who agreed to allow the magazine to be digitized. Through Roebuck’s encouragement, the COGOP became a member of the Consortium of Pentecostal Archives (CPA), a cooperative effort of Pentecostal archives, denominations, and publishing houses. Other CPA members include the denominational archives of the Assemblies of GodChurch of God (Cleveland, TN), the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, and the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. The digitized issues of the White Wing Messenger are now accessible and text-searchable on the CPA website.

The years of the White Wing Messenger that have been digitized (1923-1954) are important because of the rarity of those issues and their importance to the formation of the COGOP. During these early years, the White Wing Messengerwas published in a large newspaper format and very few copies survived. Starting in 1955, the magazine changed to a magazine format, and the denomination began selling annual bound volumes of the magazine. Bound volumes of these later years are located in various libraries and archives and are accessible to researchers. However, the years 1923 to 1954 were not very accessible to researchers.

Paul Holt expressed gratitude for the assistance in preserving and promoting the COGOP’s heritage. He stated, “we are deeply appreciative to the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center for their willingness to digitize this historic material.  We are also pleased to join hands with our friends in the Pentecostal movement to celebrate our rich heritage while also moving forward to touch the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.” Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center Digital Archivist William Molenaar supervised the digitization project and was assisted by Archives Specialists Michelle Rahmoeller and Caleb Whitlow.

Fields of the Wood Renewal Campaign

Fields of the Wood Renewal Campaign

Over the past year God has been doing some wonderful things for Heritage Ministries, and more specifically, for Fields of the Wood. Support has been growing, as has park attendance. But the park is nearly 75 years old, and many, if not all, of the markers and structures need attention. The park has stood as a testament to the faithfulness of God for 75 years, and we want it to thrive for another 75. We have labeled this undertaking as our “Fields of the Wood Renewal Campaign” (#fowrenew).

Over the past year, smaller projects have been the focus:

  • Water has been run to Prayer and Ten Commandment Mountain.
  • A new employee was hired to begin the daunting task of pressure washing everything.
  • The road atop Prayer Mountain is being extended to reroute near the exit.
  • We’re continuing to clear and trim overgrown tress and hedges.
  • The bathrooms behind the café have all new commodes and fixtures.
  • Problematic septic issues have been addressed.
  • Pool pump and equipment is new, with a new liner coming in the Spring.

People from around the globe continue to help! And you can join in the renewal process too! We have recently simplified the donation process through a new website, fowrenew.org. Anyone who wants to give to the renewal project can go to fowrenew.org and simply click the donate button. Or, a check can be mailed to our offices with “fow renew” in the memo line.

We do hope you’ll consider helping us RENEW Fields of the Wood! Help us continue to declare God’s faithfulness from the Hills of Murphy, North Carolina!
