Children’s Ministry Mini-Conference

Thursday, July 19, 2018
2:00 PM – 4:45 PM
Meeting Room 6

Children’s Ministries is hosting our second Children’s Ministry Mini-Conference here at the International Assembly. If you are a pastor, children’s ministry leader or volunteer, Sunday school teacher, family ministry director, or a concerned parent join us for a time of fellowship, instruction, interaction, and resource giveaways.

The guest presenter for our DLIK mini-conference will be Annette Safstrom. Annette graduated from Bible college in 1991 with a certification in children’s ministry. Since then she has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University, and a Master’s from SMU. She has served as the director for a rapidly growing children’s ministry, and has been a member of the Ministry Architects, a church consulting team, since January of 2012.

In January 2018 Annette coauthored the book Sustainable Children’s Ministry with Mark Devries. The book was written to help children’s ministry leaders not just “hang in” and “hold tight” but develop children’s ministry that could be sustained. During our DLIK mini-conference Annette will share her own story and ministry experiences. And she will help you learn how to recruit volunteers, partner with parents, navigate politics, and care for your own soul instead of frantically scrambling to do it all yourself. The goal or this DLIK mini-conference is to help you build a ministry foundation that will still be standing long after you are gone.

El Fuego Volcano In Guatemala

El Fuego Volcano In Guatemala

The Fuego volcano in southern Guatemala erupted on Sunday, June 3, sending lava flows and a massive ash cloud into the nearby rural communities. It was the country’s most deadly volcanic event in more than a century. At this time, the government is reporting 25 dead with 200 more unaccounted for. I have been in contact with Bishop Mario Galindo, national overseer, and we thank God that, although 15 of our church members are displaced and in shelters, no lives were lost. We are in the process of collecting clothing and food to send to the area as soon as travel is available. We would like to ask for your prayers for our Church family and also for your help. For anyone who can be a part of relief effort, donations may be sent to the Guatemala Relief Fund through the International Offices. To the people of Guatemala, we want you to know that you are not alone. The Church of God of Prophecy stands with you.

—Bishop Ben Feliz, General Presbyter, Mexico, Central America, and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean

Scholarships Surpass $1m

Scholarships Surpass $1m

The Church of God of Prophecy International Offices is marking a significant milestone in its support of ministers and leaders pursuing higher education.

In a meeting with the regional and state overseers of North America last week, Shaun McKinley, director of Accredited Ministry Development, announced that scholarships and grants provided by the offices to students enrolled in partnering programs has recently surpassed one million dollars.

“We are thankful for the faithfulness and generosity of our donors and tithing local churches,” said McKinley. “Because of their contributions, over the past decade we have been able to invest in our current and future leaders as they participate in our educational initiatives.”

The scholarships and grants awarded from Accredited Ministry Development’s annual budget are only one part of the picture. When adding scholarships from national/regional/state offices, as well as grants provided to underwrite courses, over $2.7 million has been contributed to students and schools.

“We continue to be inspired by the efforts of our students,” continued McKinley. “In addition to pursuing their studies, many are bivocational pastors, balancing school, work, and family responsibilities. Without these scholarships and the variable tuitions that we negotiate with our partners, it would be impossible for many to continue their education and grow in their ministry skill.”

Scholarships are awarded throughout the year with a number of additional scholarship funds being added within the past year. Current scholarships include:

  • Adrian L. Varlack All Nations Scholarship
  • Billy D. Murray Harvest Scholarship
  • Church Matching Scholarship
  • Cross Cultural Ministry Scholarship
  • Doctor of Ministry Scholarship
  • Ministry Honors Scholarship (formerly Leader of Leaders)
  • PTS Certificate Course Scholarship
  • Women in Ministry Scholarship

Scholarship applications may be completed online at www.cogopamd.org. Individuals or churches may also contribute to any of the above scholarship funds at the website.

News from Ethiopia

News from Ethiopia

The last several months we have suffered many problems with social unrest and political upheaval. We were unable to gather our leaders in April for training due to many travel restrictions, road blocks, and a government order for no public gatherings. In spite of this, our districts held their own gatherings and God tremendously blessed, as we will share below. As an update, we believe we have experienced an answer to our many prayers. In recent weeks, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has resigned and the government has installed a new Prime Minister who is a Pentecostal believer! He is also from the Oromo tribe, the tribe who has suffered most of the oppression in recent years. We are so thankful that these changes are taking place with very little force.
