On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast of North America bringing with her indescribable ravage and devastation. The high winds, rains and floods changed the landscape of the Gulf Coast forever. Not only was the landscape changed forever, lives were also changed, never to be the same. The ripple effect of this storm continues as families return to their homes only to find, there is "nothing" to return to. The very words, "Hurricane Katrina" are now indelibly imprinted on the minds of our precious people who lost everything.
So often, after the shock of an event such as this, we have a tendency to return to business as usual. However, for many of the families that lost everything, it will never be "business as usual." The initial response from across North America and other nations has been outstanding. Donations from individuals to the International Office, and local churches' giving through Harvest Partners Level Two has now exceeded $132,000.00. This is in addition to the thousands of dollars that has been given by local churches, and state and regional offices and sent directly to the affected areas.
Just as the effects of this hurricane are long-term, our commitment as fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord now turns to long-term response. Local churches, individuals and organizations are now realizing that they want to become connected even more compassionately to specific families and their needs. I encourage you to pray for the Lord's direction and for Him to touch you in how He desires for you to become Compassionately Connected. For information on how to respond to these families, you can email the North America Presbyter's office or you can call our office at 423.559.5256.
